Berj Zamkochian was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 15, 1934, in Beirut, Lebanon. He was the son of Armenian parents who had migrated to Lebanon. Berj's father was a musician and had a great influence on his son's musical career. Berj started playing the piano at a very young age and showed exceptional talent. He received his early music education from his father and later went on to study at the Beirut Conservatory of Music. Berj's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and competitions during his time at the conservatory. He was also invited to perform at various concerts and events in Lebanon. In 1955, Berj moved to the United States to further his music education. He enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the renowned pianist Rosina Lhévinne. Berj's time at Juilliard was a turning point in his career. He honed his skills and developed a unique style that set him apart from other pianists. He also started performing at various venues in New York City, including Carnegie Hall. Berj's performances were well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist. In 1958, Berj won the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition, which was a major milestone in his career. The competition was highly competitive, and Berj's win was a testament to his exceptional talent. The win also opened up new opportunities for him, and he started receiving invitations to perform at concerts and events around the world. Berj's career continued to flourish in the 1960s and 1970s. He performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Berj's repertoire was diverse, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of classical composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered several works by modern composers. In addition to his performances, Berj was also a respected music educator. He taught at several institutions, including the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. Berj's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors. In 1986, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the government of Lebanon. He was also awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1990 for his contributions to the arts. Berj continued to perform and teach until his death on December 14, 2005, at the age of 71.
