NetherlandsBirth:November 23, 1953Period:ModernGenre:BandSymphonyJohan De Meij is a Dutch composer and conductor, born on November 23, 1953, in Voorburg, Netherlands. He is best known for his works in the field of wind music, particularly his Symphony No. 1 "The Lord of the Rings," which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the wind band repertoire. De Meij began his musical studies at an early age, learning to play the piano and the trumpet. He later studied composition and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, where he received his degree in 1980. During his studies, he was particularly influenced by the works of Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Igor Stravinsky. After completing his studies, De Meij worked as a trombonist with the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, where he also served as a conductor. He later became the conductor of the Amstelveen Symphony Orchestra and the Doelen Ensemble in Rotterdam. In 1987, De Meij composed his Symphony No. 1 "The Lord of the Rings," based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novel of the same name. The work is divided into five movements, each representing a different character or location from the book. The symphony was premiered in Brussels in 1988 and has since been performed by numerous orchestras and wind ensembles around the world. It has also been recorded several times, including a version by the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to "The Lord of the Rings," De Meij has composed a number of other works for wind band, including "Extreme Make-over," "T-Bone Concerto," and "Casanova." He has also written works for orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles. De Meij's music is characterized by its rich harmonies, colorful orchestration, and use of programmatic elements. He often draws inspiration from literature, art, and history, and his works often tell a story or depict a scene or character. In addition to his work as a composer, De Meij is also a sought-after conductor and has led numerous orchestras and wind ensembles around the world. He has also served as a guest lecturer and clinician at universities and music schools in Europe, Asia, and the United States. De Meij has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music, including the prestigious Sudler International Wind Band Composition Prize in 1993. He is also a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Overall, Johan De Meij is a highly respected and influential figure in the world of wind music. His works have become staples of the repertoire and have helped to elevate the status of wind ensembles and their musicians. His legacy as a composer and conductor will undoubtedly continue to inspire and influence future generations of musicians.More....
