He studied under the renowned composer and pianist Melesio Morales, who recognized Codina's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Codina also studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, where he honed his skills as a composer. Codina's early works were heavily influenced by European classical music, particularly the works of Mozart and Beethoven. However, he also incorporated elements of Mexican folk music into his compositions, creating a unique sound that would become his trademark. One of Codina's most famous works is his opera "El Peñón de las Ánimas," which premiered in 1893. The opera tells the story of a love triangle between a Mexican soldier, a wealthy landowner, and a beautiful young woman. The opera was a huge success and is still performed in Mexico to this day. In addition to his opera, Codina composed numerous other works, including symphonies, chamber music, and piano pieces. His music was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and he became one of the most respected composers in Mexico during his lifetime. Despite his success, Codina remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to compose music until his death on April 9, 1901, at the age of 66.
