His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. Goldins showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for his ability to play complex pieces with ease. Goldins' family fled Latvia in 1944 during World War II and settled in Germany. There, he continued his musical studies and began composing his own music. In 1949, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. Goldins' early compositions were heavily influenced by the music of his homeland. He incorporated elements of Latvian folk music into his works, creating a unique sound that was both modern and traditional. His early works were well-received and he quickly gained a reputation as a promising young composer. In 1955, Goldins was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Europe. He spent a year in Paris, studying with the renowned composer Nadia Boulanger. This experience had a profound impact on his music, and he began to incorporate more avant-garde elements into his compositions. Goldins' music continued to evolve throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He experimented with electronic music and began incorporating elements of jazz and rock into his works.
