Jan Josef Rösler was a Czech composer born on January 28, 1771, in the town of Klatovy. He was the son of a musician and began his musical education at a young age. He studied with his father and later with the composer and organist Jan Křtitel Krumpholtz. In 1790, Rösler moved to Prague to study at the Charles University, where he received a degree in philosophy. During his time in Prague, he also studied music with the composer and conductor František Xaver Dušek. Rösler's early compositions were influenced by the classical style of Mozart and Haydn, but he later developed his own unique style. In 1794, Rösler was appointed as the organist at the Church of St. Nicholas in Prague. He held this position for over 40 years and became known for his skill as an organist and composer. He also taught music at the Prague Conservatory and was a member of the Prague Academy of Sciences. Rösler's compositions include works for orchestra, chamber music, and choral music. One of his most famous works is his Symphony in D Major, which was composed in 1808. The symphony is in the classical style and features a lively first movement, a slow second movement, a minuet, and a lively finale. Rösler also composed several works for the organ, including his Prelude and Fugue in C Major. This piece is a showcase of Rösler's skill as an organist and features a virtuosic prelude followed by a complex fugue. In addition to his instrumental works, Rösler also composed several choral works, including his Mass in C Major. This work features a large choir and orchestra and is a grand and majestic piece of music. Rösler's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers in Prague. However, his music fell out of favor after his death, and it was not until the 20th century that his works began to be rediscovered and performed again. Today, Rösler is recognized as an important figure in Czech classical music. His compositions are known for their elegance, beauty, and technical skill. His music continues to be performed and recorded by orchestras and ensembles around the world.
