Ian Parker is a Canadian classical pianist who has established himself as one of the most exciting and versatile musicians of his generation. Born in Vancouver in 1978, Parker began playing the piano at the age of three and showed an early aptitude for the instrument. He was soon enrolled in the Vancouver Academy of Music, where he studied with renowned pianist Lee Kum-Sing. Parker's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the Canadian music scene. He won his first major competition at the age of 12, taking first prize in the Canadian Music Competition. This was followed by a string of other awards and accolades, including the prestigious National Arts Centre Award in 1994. Parker's early success paved the way for a career as a professional musician. He went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. While at Juilliard, Parker studied with some of the most renowned pianists of the day, including Yoheved Kaplinsky and Jerome Lowenthal. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Parker embarked on a career as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as a dynamic and engaging performer, known for his technical virtuosity and expressive playing. He has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Parker's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing everything from the classical masters to contemporary composers. He has a particular affinity for the music of Beethoven, and has performed all 32 of the composer's piano sonatas in a series of concerts across Canada. He has also championed the music of Canadian composers, and has premiered works by such luminaries as Alexina Louie and John Burge. In addition to his work as a soloist, Parker is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including violinist James Ehnes and cellist Shauna Rolston. He is a founding member of the piano trio Triple Forte, which has been praised for its "virtuosity, energy, and communicative power" by the Toronto Star.
