James Ord Hume was a British composer and conductor who lived from 1864 to 1932. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and showed an early interest in music. His father was a musician and conductor, and Hume began playing the cornet at a young age. He later learned to play the piano and the violin, and began composing music in his teens. Hume's musical career began in earnest when he joined the band of the 4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers as a cornet player. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the bandmaster of the 5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in 1887. He also conducted the Newcastle City Band and the Newcastle Philharmonic Society. Hume's compositions were influenced by his military background, and many of his works were written for brass bands. He wrote over 200 pieces of music, including marches, overtures, and suites. Some of his most famous works include "The Australasian," "The Wizard," and "The Black Knight." Hume's music was well-received by audiences and critics alike. His compositions were known for their catchy melodies and lively rhythms, and they were often performed at military and civic events. Hume was also a respected conductor, and he led many performances of his own music as well as works by other composers. In addition to his musical career, Hume was also a successful businessman. He owned a music shop in Newcastle, and he was involved in the production of musical instruments. He was also a member of the Newcastle City Council, and he served as the Lord Mayor of Newcastle in 1917. Hume's legacy as a composer and conductor continues to this day. His music is still performed by brass bands around the world, and his influence can be heard in the works of many contemporary composers.
