Antigoni Goni is a renowned classical guitarist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Athens, Greece in 1969, Goni began playing the guitar at the age of six under the guidance of her father, a self-taught musician. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began studying with some of the most respected guitarists in Greece. In 1987, Goni moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she studied with the legendary guitarist Sharon Isbin and earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in guitar performance. During her time at Juilliard, Goni won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 1995. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Goni embarked on a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Goni has also collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Goni's career was her performance at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She played a solo guitar piece by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Goni has also been a champion of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering works by composers such as Leo Brouwer, Sergio Assad, and Tan Dun. In addition to her performing career, Goni is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Macedonia in Greece. Goni is also the founder and artistic director of the Volterra Project, a summer music program in Italy that brings together young musicians from around the world to study and perform together. Throughout her career, Goni has received numerous awards and accolades for her artistry and contributions to the classical guitar world. In 2008, she was awarded the prestigious "Artist of the Year" award by the Greek Ministry of Culture. She has also been honored by the Guitar Foundation of America, the American Guitar Society, and the Hellenic Society for the Performing Arts. Despite her many accomplishments, Goni remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and teach around the world, inspiring audiences and students alike with her passion for music and her unparalleled skill on the guitar.
