Role:EnsembleOrkiestra Muzyki Nowej, also known as the Orchestra of New Music, is a classical music ensemble based in Warsaw, Poland. The ensemble was founded in 1993 by composer and conductor Szymon Bywalec, who remains the artistic director of the group to this day. The founding of Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej was a response to the lack of opportunities for contemporary classical music in Poland at the time. Bywalec wanted to create a platform for new and experimental music, and to showcase the work of Polish composers alongside international repertoire. The ensemble's core members are a group of highly skilled musicians, many of whom have been with the group since its inception. These include violinists Agnieszka Marucha and Katarzyna Gluza, cellist Tomasz Strahl, and percussionist Tomasz Kozłowski. Over the years, Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej has performed at major festivals and venues across Poland and Europe, including the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Venice Biennale, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of renowned composers and performers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Steve Reich, and John Zorn. One of the highlights of Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej's career was their performance of Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima at the 2014 Warsaw Autumn festival. The piece, which was written in 1960 and is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century music, is a haunting and powerful tribute to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej's performance was widely praised for its intensity and emotional impact. Another notable performance by the ensemble was their collaboration with American composer and saxophonist John Zorn in 2016. The concert, which took place at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, featured a selection of Zorn's compositions for chamber orchestra, including his acclaimed piece The Alchemist. The performance was a testament to Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej's versatility and ability to tackle complex and challenging music. Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej has also been recognized for their contributions to contemporary classical music. In 2013, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The medal is given to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the development of Polish culture. In addition to their performances, Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly holds workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej has established itself as a leading ensemble in the world of contemporary classical music. With their commitment to new and experimental music, and their dedication to excellence in performance, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music.More....
