The University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Houston, Texas. Founded in 1983, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and accomplished wind ensembles in the United States. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Charles Hausmann, who served as its conductor until 2015. Dr. Hausmann was a professor of music at the University of St. Thomas and had a passion for wind music. He saw the need for a high-quality wind ensemble in the Houston area and decided to create one. The ensemble's main members are students and faculty from the University of St. Thomas, as well as professional musicians from the Houston area. The ensemble is made up of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments and performs a wide variety of classical music, including works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky. Over the years, the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble has performed at many prestigious venues and events. One of its most notable performances was at the 2008 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, where it received a standing ovation from the audience. The ensemble has also performed at the Midwest Clinic, the largest music education conference in the world, and has been invited to perform at the National Band Association Convention. In addition to its performances, the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2009, the ensemble was named the winner of the American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance, a national competition that recognizes excellence in the field of wind music. The ensemble has also been invited to perform at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention and has received numerous awards from the Texas Music Educators Association. One of the highlights of the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble's repertoire is its performances of contemporary wind music. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered many new works by composers such as John Mackey, David Maslanka, and Michael Daugherty.
