Brett Miller was born on May 12, 1978, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical violinist. From a young age, Miller showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly progressed to more advanced pieces. Miller's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer John Corigliano. Miller's time at Juilliard was a formative experience, and he credits Corigliano with helping him develop his unique style. After graduating from Juilliard, Miller began composing music professionally. His early works were well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the classical music world. Miller's music is characterized by its emotional depth and complexity, with many of his pieces featuring intricate harmonies and unconventional time signatures. One of Miller's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 2005. The piece is a sprawling, multi-movement work that showcases Miller's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex, layered textures. The symphony was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2006 and received critical acclaim. Another highlight of Miller's career was his collaboration with the renowned choreographer Mark Morris. In 2010, Morris commissioned Miller to compose the music for his ballet "A Forest." The piece was a critical and commercial success, and Miller's music was praised for its ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of Morris's choreography. In addition to his work as a composer, Miller is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed his own works in concert and has collaborated with other musicians on various projects. Miller's piano playing is characterized by its technical virtuosity and its ability to convey the emotional depth of his compositions. Miller's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he has received numerous awards and accolades for his work. In 2015, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his piece "The Crossing," a choral work that explores themes of migration and displacement.
