Born on December 22, 1973, in Bucharest, Romania, Prunaru showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. He studied at the George Enescu Music School in Bucharest, where he was mentored by renowned violinist and pedagogue Stefan Gheorghiu. In 1990, Prunaru won first prize at the George Enescu International Violin Competition, which marked the beginning of his international career. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Andre Gertler and at the Juilliard School in New York with Dorothy DeLay. During his studies, Prunaru won several other prestigious competitions, including the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in 1994 and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1995. Prunaru has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.
