He was the son of a music teacher and began playing the piano at a young age. Henkemans showed great promise as a musician and went on to study at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he was taught by renowned pianist and composer Willem Pijper. Henkemans made his debut as a pianist in 1935, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. This performance was a great success and marked the beginning of Henkemans' career as a concert pianist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Henkemans was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Henkemans was also a sought-after chamber musician and collaborated with many of the leading musicians of his time.
