Jerry Hunt was an American composer, performer, and sound artist who was born on November 28, 1943, in Waco, Texas. He was raised in a musical family, and his father was a jazz pianist. Hunt began playing the piano at a young age and showed an early interest in music. He attended Baylor University in Waco, where he studied music and philosophy. After completing his undergraduate studies, Hunt moved to New York City in 1966 to pursue a career in music. He became involved in the experimental music scene and began composing his own works. Hunt's early compositions were influenced by the minimalist and serialist movements of the time, but he soon developed his own unique style. Hunt's music was characterized by its use of unconventional instruments and sound sources, including homemade electronic devices, found objects, and his own voice. He was also interested in the relationship between sound and space, and many of his works were designed to be performed in specific locations. One of Hunt's most famous works is "Ground," which he composed in 1970. The piece was performed in a large, empty room, and the performers used a variety of sound sources, including metal pipes, glass bottles, and electronic devices. The performers moved around the space, creating a complex and ever-changing sonic environment. Hunt continued to compose and perform throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and his works were performed at festivals and concerts around the world. He also collaborated with other artists, including choreographers and visual artists, to create multimedia performances. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Hunt was also a teacher and mentor. He taught at several universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and the California Institute of the Arts. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to inspire his students to explore new ideas and techniques. Hunt's life and career were cut short when he died in a car accident on September 27, 1993, at the age of 49. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the many artists he influenced. Hunt's work continues to inspire new generations of composers and performers, and his contributions to the field of experimental music are widely recognized and celebrated.
