Philip Turbett was born on May 12, 1985, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned cellist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Turbett showed a keen interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of four. Turbett's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He was soon invited to perform with various orchestras and ensembles, and by the age of ten, he had already won several prestigious awards. In 1996, Turbett was accepted into the Yehudi Menuhin School, a prestigious music school in Surrey, England. There, he studied under the guidance of some of the world's most renowned cellists, including Steven Isserlis and Ralph Kirshbaum. During his time at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Turbett continued to excel, winning numerous awards and competitions. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, which allowed him to study at the Royal College of Music in London. After completing his studies at the Royal College of Music, Turbett began his professional career as a cellist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young cellists of his generation, and he was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Turbett's performances were characterized by his technical brilliance and his ability to convey deep emotion through his playing. He was particularly noted for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. In 2010, Turbett was invited to perform at the BBC Proms, one of the world's most prestigious classical music festivals. His performance was widely praised, and he was hailed as one of the most promising young cellists of his generation. Over the years, Turbett has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Riccardo Muti. Turbett's recordings have also received critical acclaim. His recording of Bach's Cello Suites was hailed as a "landmark recording" by Gramophone magazine, and his recording of Beethoven's complete works for cello and piano with pianist Martha Argerich was described as "a revelation" by The Guardian. In addition to his performing career, Turbett is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York. Throughout his career, Turbett has received numerous awards and honors. In 2015, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music, and in 2018, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Despite his many achievements, Turbett remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, and he is widely regarded as one of the most talented and influential cellists of his generation.
