Frederick Ranalow was a renowned American baritone singer who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. He was born on December 17, 1873, in London, England, to a family of musicians. His father, Frederick Ranalow Sr., was a well-known tenor, and his mother, Mary Ranalow, was a pianist. From a young age, Ranalow showed a keen interest in music and began his training in singing and piano. In 1888, when Ranalow was just 15 years old, his family moved to the United States, where he continued his music education. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During his time at the Royal Academy, he won several awards for his exceptional singing abilities. Ranalow made his professional debut in 1895 at the Boston Symphony Hall, where he performed as a soloist in Handel's Messiah. His performance was well-received, and he soon became a sought-after singer in the United States and Europe. He performed in several operas, oratorios, and concerts, and his rich baritone voice and impeccable technique earned him critical acclaim. One of Ranalow's most significant performances was in 1906 when he played the role of Escamillo in the American premiere of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. The performance was a huge success, and Ranalow's portrayal of the character was praised for its depth and intensity. He went on to perform the role of Escamillo in several other productions, cementing his reputation as one of the finest baritone singers of his time. Ranalow also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing in several major venues across the world. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Handel's Messiah, which he performed in several countries, including the United States, England, and Australia. He also performed in several other oratorios, including Mendelssohn's Elijah and Haydn's Creation. In addition to his performances, Ranalow was also a respected voice teacher. He taught at several institutions, including the New England Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. His students included several notable singers, including the soprano Dorothy Kirsten and the tenor James Melton. Throughout his career, Ranalow received several awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1912, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French government for his services to music. He was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London in 1924. Ranalow continued to perform and teach until his death on March 1, 1953, in New York City. He left behind a legacy as one of the finest baritone singers of his time, and his contributions to the world of classical music continue to be celebrated today.
