Berthold Oppitz is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Munich, Germany in 1937, Oppitz began playing the piano at a young age and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Munich Academy of Music with Rosl Schmid, a renowned piano teacher, and later with Wilhelm Kempff, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Oppitz's career as a concert pianist began in the 1960s, when he won several prestigious competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Geneva and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. These victories launched him onto the international stage, and he soon became known for his powerful and expressive playing style. Throughout his career, Oppitz has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of Oppitz's most memorable performances was his 1985 concert at the Salzburg Festival, where he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Oppitz's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its sensitivity and depth. Oppitz has also been recognized for his recordings, which include works by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Mozart. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas won the Grand Prix du Disque in 1988, and his recording of Schubert's Piano Sonatas was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 1995. In addition to his performing and recording career, Oppitz has also been a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Munich Academy of Music since 1976, and has also given masterclasses around the world. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers as pianists themselves.
