The Körnerscher Sing-Verein Dresden is a classical music ensemble that has been active for over 200 years. Founded in 1811 by Christian Gottfried Körner, a prominent figure in the cultural life of Dresden, the ensemble has become one of the most respected choirs in Germany. Körner was a writer, poet, and patron of the arts who was passionate about music. He founded the choir with the aim of promoting the performance of choral music in Dresden. The choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and its members were drawn from the city's most talented singers. Over the years, the Körnerscher Sing-Verein Dresden has had many distinguished members, including the composer Richard Wagner, who sang in the choir as a young man. Other notable members have included the conductor Hermann Abendroth and the composer and conductor Kurt Masur. The choir has performed a wide range of choral music, from the works of Bach and Handel to contemporary compositions. One of its most famous performances was the premiere of Wagner's opera Rienzi in 1842. The choir has been led by many distinguished conductors over the years, including Hermann Abendroth, Kurt Masur, and Helmut Koch. The current conductor is Matthias Jung, who has been with the choir since 2010. In addition to its regular performances in Dresden, the Körnerscher Sing-Verein Dresden has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. The choir has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall in New York. The Körnerscher Sing-Verein Dresden has also made many recordings over the years, including a critically acclaimed recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Despite its long history, the Körnerscher Sing-Verein Dresden remains a vibrant and active ensemble. The choir continues to perform at the highest level and is widely regarded as one of the finest choirs in the world.
