Heleen Hulst is a renowned Dutch violinist and contemporary music specialist. Born on December 17, 1974, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Hulst grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a conductor, and her mother was a pianist. Hulst started playing the violin at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Hulst received her formal music education at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where she studied with renowned violinist Davina van Wely. She later continued her studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where she studied with Vera Beths. During her studies, Hulst developed a keen interest in contemporary music and started collaborating with various composers. In 1998, Hulst co-founded the Ensemble Klang, a contemporary music ensemble that has since become one of the leading ensembles in the Netherlands. The ensemble has performed at major festivals and venues across Europe, including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Gaudeamus Music Week, and the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam. Hulst has also collaborated with various other contemporary music ensembles, including the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, the Nieuw Ensemble, and the Ives Ensemble. She has premiered numerous works by leading contemporary composers, including Louis Andriessen, Richard Ayres, and Michael Gordon. In addition to her work as a contemporary music specialist, Hulst is also an accomplished performer of classical repertoire. She has performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Residentie Orchestra. Hulst has received numerous awards and accolades for her work as a musician. In 2003, she was awarded the Kersjes van de Groenekan Prize, one of the most prestigious music prizes in the Netherlands. In 2007, she received the VSCD Classical Music Prize for her work with Ensemble Klang. Hulst has also been recognized for her work as an educator. She has taught at various music schools and conservatories in the Netherlands, including the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 2015, she was appointed as a professor of violin at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Throughout her career, Hulst has remained committed to promoting contemporary music and expanding the boundaries of classical music. She has collaborated with artists from various disciplines, including dance, theater, and visual arts, and has worked on numerous interdisciplinary projects.
