Cecilio Tieles was a renowned classical music artist who was born on January 1, 1920, in Valencia, Spain. He was the youngest of six siblings and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which meant that music was always a part of his life from a young age. Tieles began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons from his mother. He showed a natural talent for the instrument and quickly progressed, impressing his teachers with his ability to play complex pieces with ease. By the time he was a teenager, he had already won several local competitions and was considered a prodigy. In 1936, Tieles was awarded a scholarship to study at the Madrid Conservatory, where he continued to hone his skills as a pianist. However, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, and he was forced to flee to France with his family. Despite the upheaval, Tieles continued to practice and perform, and he soon caught the attention of the French music scene. In 1940, Tieles made his debut at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, where he performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven. The concert was a resounding success, and Tieles was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. He continued to perform throughout France and Europe, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretations of classical works. In 1947, Tieles was invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, where he played a program of works by Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albéniz. The concert was a triumph, and Tieles was praised for his ability to capture the essence of Spanish music in his playing. He went on to perform at other major festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms, cementing his reputation as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Throughout his career, Tieles was known for his impeccable technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, whose music he played with a rare combination of sensitivity and power. He also had a deep affinity for the music of Spanish composers, and he was instrumental in bringing their works to a wider audience. In addition to his performing career, Tieles was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatory and the Geneva Conservatory, where he mentored a generation of young pianists. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in their own right, and Tieles was widely regarded as one of the most influential piano teachers of his time. Tieles received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Legion of Honor, France's highest civilian award. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Despite his success, Tieles remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and teach well into his seventies, and he remained a beloved figure in the classical music world until his death in 2005 at the age of 85. His legacy lives on through his recordings, which continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
