Atheneum Light Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 30 years. The group was founded in 1989 by conductor and pianist, David Snell, and has since become one of the most popular orchestras in the UK. David Snell, who was born in London in 1936, began his musical career as a pianist. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later became a professor of piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In addition to his work as a pianist, Snell was also a prolific composer and arranger. He worked on numerous film scores, including the James Bond films, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film Out of Africa. Snell founded Atheneum Light Orchestra with the aim of creating a group that would perform light classical music in a relaxed and informal setting. The ensemble's name was inspired by the ancient Greek school of philosophy, the Athenaeum, which was known for its focus on the arts and sciences.
