Role:ComposerBirth:March 9, 1839 in New York, NYDeath:July 10, 1908 in Poland Springs, MNPhoebe Palmer Knapp was a prominent American composer of the 19th century, known for her contributions to the field of sacred music. Born on March 9, 1839, in New York City, Knapp was the daughter of Walter C. Palmer, a successful businessman, and Phoebe Worrall Palmer, a well-known evangelist and writer. Growing up in a family that valued music and education, Knapp began studying piano at a young age. She showed a natural talent for the instrument and quickly progressed in her studies. By the age of 14, she was already performing in public concerts and had begun composing her own music. In 1857, Knapp married Joseph Fairchild Knapp, a successful businessman and music publisher. Together, they had four children and lived in Brooklyn, New York. Despite her busy family life, Knapp continued to pursue her passion for music and became a prolific composer. One of Knapp's most famous works is the hymn tune "Assurance," which she composed in 1873. The tune was later paired with the lyrics of the hymn "Blessed Assurance" by Fanny Crosby, and has since become a beloved classic in the world of Christian music. Knapp also composed a number of other hymns and sacred songs, many of which were published in hymnals and songbooks throughout the United States. Some of her other notable works include "Open the Gates of the Temple," "The Master Hath Come," and "Work, for the Night is Coming." In addition to her work as a composer, Knapp was also an accomplished pianist and organist. She often performed in public concerts and was known for her skillful and expressive playing. She also taught music to students in her community and was a respected member of the musical community in New York City. Despite her success as a composer and musician, Knapp faced many challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field. She often had to fight for recognition and respect, and was sometimes dismissed or overlooked because of her gender. However, she persevered and continued to create beautiful music that has stood the test of time. Knapp passed away on July 10, 1908, at the age of 69. Her legacy as a composer and musician lives on, and her contributions to the world of sacred music continue to inspire and uplift people around the world.More....
