From a young age, Fieldsteel was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later learned to play the violin and the guitar. Fieldsteel attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of California, San Diego. During his time in school, Fieldsteel studied under renowned composers such as Roger Reynolds, Rand Steiger, and Michael Daugherty. Fieldsteel's music is known for its use of technology and multimedia elements. He often incorporates electronic sounds and video projections into his compositions, creating a unique and immersive experience for the audience. His works have been performed by ensembles such as the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the JACK Quartet. One of Fieldsteel's most notable works is his piece "The Body of Your Dreams," which was commissioned by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players in 2015. The piece is a multimedia work that explores the themes of body image and self-esteem. It features a video projection of a woman undergoing plastic surgery, while the music incorporates electronic sounds and live instruments. Another notable work by Fieldsteel is his piece "The Last Flight of Saint Ex," which was commissioned by the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2017. The piece is inspired by the life of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of "The Little Prince" who was also a pilot.
