Theona Gubba Chkheidze was a Georgian classical music artist who was born on January 1, 1925, in Tbilisi, Georgia. She was the daughter of a famous Georgian composer and conductor, Zakaria Paliashvili, who was also the founder of the Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Growing up in a musical family, Theona was exposed to music from a very young age and showed a natural talent for singing. At the age of 16, Theona began her formal music education at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, where she studied under the guidance of renowned Georgian vocalists and teachers, including Nino Makharadze and Vano Sarajishvili. She graduated with honors in 1947 and went on to pursue a career in music. Theona's career as a classical music artist began in the 1950s when she started performing in various concerts and operas in Georgia. Her powerful and expressive voice quickly gained recognition, and she soon became one of the most sought-after vocalists in the country. In 1954, she made her debut at the Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she performed the lead role in the opera "Abesalom and Eteri" by Zakaria Paliashvili, her father. Throughout her career, Theona performed in numerous operas, concerts, and recitals both in Georgia and abroad. She was known for her exceptional vocal range, which allowed her to sing a wide variety of genres, including opera, folk, and classical music. Her performances were always characterized by her emotional depth and powerful stage presence, which captivated audiences and critics alike. One of the highlights of Theona's career was her performance in the opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, which she performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1960. Her portrayal of the fiery and passionate Carmen was widely praised, and the performance was considered a major success. She also performed in other famous operas, including "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi and "Madama Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini. In addition to her performances, Theona was also a respected music educator and mentor. She taught at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire for many years, where she trained and inspired numerous young vocalists. Her dedication to music education and her passion for sharing her knowledge and experience with others earned her the respect and admiration of her students and colleagues. Throughout her career, Theona received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1965, she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR, and in 1975, she was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in Georgia. She was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, one of the highest civilian honors in the Soviet Union. Theona Gubba Chkheidze passed away on December 22, 2010, at the age of 85. Her legacy as a classical music artist and educator continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians in Georgia and beyond. Her powerful voice, emotional depth, and dedication to music will always be remembered as a testament to her talent and passion for the art form.
