Alfonso Esparza Oteo was a Mexican composer and pianist who was born on August 5, 1894, in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He was the son of a musician and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father, Francisco Esparza, was a violinist and his mother, Maria Oteo, was a pianist. Alfonso showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Alfonso's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He received his first formal music education at the age of eight when he began studying piano with his mother. He later studied with other prominent musicians in Mexico, including Carlos Chavez and Manuel M. Ponce. In 1915, Alfonso moved to Mexico City to further his music education. He enrolled at the National Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Felipe Villanueva and piano with Manuel M. Ponce. During this time, he also began performing as a pianist and composer, and his talent quickly gained recognition. Alfonso's early compositions were heavily influenced by Mexican folk music and the European classical tradition. He was particularly interested in the music of Chopin and Liszt, and his piano works often featured virtuosic passages and intricate harmonies. One of Alfonso's most famous works is his song "Adiós Mariquita Linda," which he composed in 1928. The song became an instant hit and has since become a classic of Mexican popular music. It has been covered by numerous artists over the years, including Nat King Cole and Julio Iglesias. In addition to his popular songs, Alfonso also composed a number of classical works, including piano pieces, chamber music, and orchestral works. His compositions were often performed in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, and he was regarded as one of the leading composers of his time. Alfonso's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1950 at the age of 56. However, his music continues to be celebrated and performed to this day. His legacy as a composer and pianist has had a lasting impact on Mexican music and culture, and he is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of Mexican classical music.
