He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father, who was a pianist, introduced him to the world of music at a young age, and he began playing the piano when he was just five years old. Comellas showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He studied music at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, where he received a degree in piano performance. He also studied composition with the renowned composer Joaquim Homs. After completing his studies, Comellas began his career as a composer, and his works were soon recognized for their originality and creativity. He was known for his use of traditional Spanish music and his incorporation of modern techniques and styles. One of Comellas' most famous works is his "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which was written in 1967. The concerto is a tribute to the Spanish guitar and features a solo guitar accompanied by a full orchestra. The piece is known for its virtuosic guitar passages and its use of Spanish rhythms and melodies. Comellas also wrote several operas, including "El Jardín de las Hespérides" and "La Celestina." "El Jardín de las Hespérides" is based on the Greek myth of the Garden of the Hesperides and features a libretto by the Spanish poet Jaime Gil de Biedma. "La Celestina" is based on the Spanish novel of the same name and features a libretto by the Spanish playwright Antonio Gala. In addition to his operas and concertos, Comellas wrote several chamber music works, including "String Quartet No. 1" and "Sonata for Violin and Piano." His chamber music works are known for their intricate harmonies and use of Spanish folk melodies. Comellas was also a respected music educator and taught at several institutions, including the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu and the Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona. He was known for his dedication to his students and his passion for music education. Throughout his career, Comellas received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1983, he was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Barcelona. Comellas passed away on December 28, 2011, at the age of 78.
