He was the son of a musician and grew up in a musical family. His father, Vicente Lleó y Pellicer, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Josefa Gómez, was a pianist. Lleó showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. Lleó's musical education began at the Valencia Conservatory, where he studied piano with José María Gómez and composition with Salvador Giner. He later continued his studies in Madrid, where he studied with Tomás Bretón and Felipe Pedrell. Lleó was a talented student and quickly gained recognition for his musical abilities. In 1892, Lleó won the National Prize for Composition for his opera "La Corte de Faraón" (The Court of Pharaoh), which was based on a play by Pedro Muñoz Seca. The opera was a huge success and established Lleó as one of the leading composers of his time. "La Corte de Faraón" is still considered one of Lleó's most important works and is frequently performed in Spain and other countries. Lleó continued to compose operas throughout his career, including "La Dolores" (1895), "La Celestina" (1902), and "La Malquerida" (1913). His operas were known for their melodic richness and dramatic intensity, and they were popular with audiences in Spain and beyond. In addition to his operas, Lleó also composed orchestral works, chamber music, and songs. His orchestral works include the "Suite Española" (Spanish Suite), which features traditional Spanish melodies, and the "Sinfonía Breve" (Short Symphony), which is a concise and energetic work for orchestra. Lleó's chamber music includes works for piano, violin, and cello, and his songs are known for their lyrical beauty and expressive melodies. Lleó was also a respected conductor and served as the director of the Valencia Symphony Orchestra from 1903 to 1905. He was a champion of Spanish music and worked to promote the works of other Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. Despite his success as a composer and conductor, Lleó faced financial difficulties throughout his life. He struggled to make a living from his music and was forced to take on other jobs to support himself and his family. In 1922, he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he worked as a music teacher and continued to compose. Lleó died on June 22, 1922, in Buenos Aires, at the age of 52. He left behind a legacy of beautiful and expressive music that continues to be appreciated by audiences around the world. His works are an important part of the Spanish classical music tradition and continue to inspire new generations of musicians and composers.More....
