André Varel was a French composer born on May 12, 1890, in Paris. He was the son of a wealthy family and grew up in a musical environment. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer. André showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. At the age of 14, André entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Gabriel Fauré and piano with Louis Diémer. He was a brilliant student and won several prizes, including the Prix de Rome in 1913. This prize allowed him to study in Rome for four years, where he was exposed to the works of Italian composers such as Verdi and Puccini. After returning to Paris, André began his career as a composer. His early works were influenced by the Impressionist movement, which was popular in France at the time. He wrote several pieces for piano, including his Suite pour piano, which was well-received by critics. In 1920, André married a pianist named Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais. They had two children together, a son named Jean and a daughter named Françoise. Marie-Louise was also a talented musician and often performed André's works. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, André continued to compose and gained a reputation as one of France's leading composers. He wrote several ballets, including Les Fêtes de Polymnie and La Belle au bois dormant, which were performed by the Ballets Russes. He also wrote several operas, including Le Petit Poucet and La Princesse de Babylone. During World War II, André and his family fled Paris and went into hiding in the countryside. Despite the difficult circumstances, André continued to compose and wrote several works during this time, including his String Quartet No. 2. After the war, André returned to Paris and resumed his career as a composer. He wrote several works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 2 and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. He also wrote several chamber music works, including his String Quartet No. 3. In 1950, André was awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris for his contributions to French music. He continued to compose until his death on January 25, 1979, in Paris. André Varel's music is characterized by its lyricism and elegance. His works often feature lush harmonies and intricate melodies. He was influenced by the Impressionist movement, as well as by Italian opera and French Baroque music. Some of André's most famous works include his Suite pour piano, his ballet La Belle au bois dormant, and his Symphony No. 2. His music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world and continues to be admired for its beauty and sophistication.
