John Woods Duke was an American composer and pianist who was born on February 26, 1899, in Cumberland, Maryland. He was the son of a Methodist minister and grew up in a musical family. His mother was a pianist and his father played the violin. Duke began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Duke attended the University of Pittsburgh and studied music theory and composition. He later studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with composer Rosario Scalero. Duke also studied with composer Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Duke's early compositions were influenced by the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. He also drew inspiration from American folk music and jazz. Duke's music was characterized by its lyricism and use of rich harmonies. Duke's first major work was his Piano Sonata, which he composed in 1923. The piece was well-received and helped establish Duke as a composer to watch. He went on to compose a number of other works for piano, including his Three Preludes and his Piano Concerto. In addition to his work as a composer, Duke was also an accomplished pianist. He performed his own works as well as the works of other composers. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Debussy and Ravel. Duke's most famous work is his song cycle, "Songs to the Dark Virgin." The cycle consists of five songs for voice and piano and was composed in 1943. The songs are based on poems by Langston Hughes and deal with themes of African-American identity and spirituality. The cycle has been performed by many notable singers, including Leontyne Price and Jessye Norman. Duke also composed a number of other vocal works, including his "Three Chinese Lyrics" and his "Five Poems of Emily Dickinson." His vocal music was known for its sensitivity to text and its ability to capture the emotional content of the words. Duke's music was well-regarded by his contemporaries, but he never achieved the same level of fame as some of his peers. He was known for his modesty and his dedication to his craft. He continued to compose and perform throughout his life, and his music remains an important part of the American classical music canon. Duke died on October 26, 1984, in New York City. He was 85 years old. His legacy as a composer and pianist continues to be celebrated by musicians and music lovers around the world.
