The Magnard Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in the United Kingdom. The ensemble was founded in 2012 by five musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of classical music. The founding members of the ensemble were flautist Mana Shibata, oboist Joseph Shiner, clarinettist Catriona Scott, bassoonist Jonathan Davies, and horn player Phil Woods. The ensemble takes its name from the French composer Albéric Magnard, who was known for his chamber music compositions. The Magnard Ensemble has a particular interest in performing works by lesser-known composers, as well as contemporary music. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by several contemporary composers, including Charlotte Bray, Michael Berkeley, and Joseph Phibbs. The Magnard Ensemble has performed at many prestigious venues in the United Kingdom, including Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, and the Royal Albert Hall. The ensemble has also performed at festivals such as the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Oxford Lieder Festival, and the Brighton Festival. One of the highlights of the Magnard Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2016 BBC Proms. The ensemble performed a program of works by French composers, including Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and received critical acclaim. The Magnard Ensemble has also won several awards for their performances and recordings. In 2015, the ensemble won the St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition, which led to a performance at the prestigious London venue. The ensemble's debut album, "Elemental," was released in 2017 and received critical acclaim. The album features works by British composers, including Judith Weir, Jonathan Dove, and Joseph Phibbs. The Magnard Ensemble has undergone some changes in its membership since its founding. In 2017, horn player Phil Woods left the ensemble and was replaced by Anneke Scott. In 2019, bassoonist Jonathan Davies left the ensemble and was replaced by Catriona McDermid. Despite these changes, the Magnard Ensemble continues to be a vibrant and dynamic ensemble, dedicated to exploring the rich repertoire of classical music and bringing it to audiences around the world.
