Mackenzie Melemed is a classical pianist who has been captivating audiences with his virtuosic performances since he was a child. Born in 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts, Melemed began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. His parents, both musicians themselves, recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Melemed's early years were spent studying with renowned piano teachers in the Boston area, including Wha Kyung Byun and Sergey Schepkin. He also attended the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where he received a rigorous musical education and had the opportunity to perform in a variety of settings. As a teenager, Melemed began to gain recognition for his exceptional talent. In 2010, he won first prize in the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Concerto Competition, which led to a performance with the orchestra at Symphony Hall. He also won first prize in the Steinway Society of Massachusetts Piano Competition and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School Concerto Competition. Melemed's success continued into his college years, when he attended the Juilliard School in New York City. There, he studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Robert McDonald, two of the most respected piano teachers in the world. He also had the opportunity to perform in some of the city's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In 2016, Melemed won first prize in the Juilliard Concerto Competition, which led to a performance with the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. He also won first prize in the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition and the New York International Piano Competition, cementing his reputation as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Melemed's performances are characterized by their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He has a particular affinity for the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, and his interpretations of their works have been praised for their sensitivity and nuance. He is also a champion of contemporary music, and has premiered works by composers such as Lowell Liebermann and Michael Brown. In addition to his solo performances, Melemed is an active chamber musician. He has collaborated with some of the most talented young musicians in the country, including violinist Tessa Lark and cellist Zlatomir Fung. He is also a member of the New York-based ensemble Decoda, which is dedicated to bringing classical music to underserved communities. Melemed's talent has been recognized by some of the most prestigious organizations in the classical music world. In addition to his competition wins, he has been awarded the Arthur Rubinstein Prize and the Gina Bachauer Scholarship. He has also been a finalist in the National Chopin Piano Competition and the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Despite his many accomplishments, Melemed remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve his technique and deepen his understanding of the music he plays.
