He was a self-taught musician who learned to play the saxophone, clarinet, and accordion in his teenage years. Lockyer's musical career began during World War II when he joined the Royal Air Force as a musician. He played in the RAF Dance Orchestra and later became the band leader. After the war, Lockyer worked as a freelance musician and arranger, playing in various bands and orchestras. He also worked as a musical director for several radio and television shows. In the 1950s, Lockyer began composing music for films and television. He wrote the score for the 1955 film "The Colditz Story" and went on to compose music for several other films, including "The Battle of the River Plate" (1956), "The One That Got Away" (1957), and "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" (1961). Lockyer's music was known for its melodic and romantic style, which perfectly complemented the films' themes. Lockyer's success in film music led to more opportunities in television. He composed the theme music for several popular TV shows, including "The Avengers," "The Saint," and "The Baron." Lockyer's music for "The Avengers" became particularly famous and is still recognized as one of the most iconic TV theme tunes of all time. In addition to his work in film and television, Lockyer also composed classical music. He wrote several pieces for orchestra, including "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" and "Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra."
