The North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (NASO) is a classical music ensemble based in Harrison, Arkansas. Founded in 1960, the orchestra has become a cultural cornerstone of the region, providing high-quality performances and educational opportunities to the community. The idea for the orchestra was first proposed by a group of local musicians who recognized the need for a professional ensemble in the area. With the support of the community, they formed the North Arkansas Symphony Society and began fundraising efforts to establish the orchestra. In 1961, the first concert was held under the direction of conductor and founding member, Dr. Robert Mueller. The orchestra consisted of 25 musicians and performed in the Harrison High School auditorium. Over the years, the orchestra has grown in size and reputation, attracting talented musicians from across the country. Today, the NASO is led by Music Director and Conductor, Philip Mann. Mann, a graduate of the Juilliard School, has conducted orchestras around the world and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the ensemble. The orchestra's main members include a diverse group of musicians, ranging from seasoned professionals to up-and-coming talent. Many of the musicians are also educators, sharing their passion for music with students in the community. One of the highlights of the NASO's performances is their annual concert series, which features a variety of classical and contemporary works. The series typically includes four concerts, each with a different theme or focus. Past themes have included "Mozart and More," "American Masters," and "Russian Romantics." In addition to their concert series, the NASO also performs at community events and collaborates with other local organizations. They have worked with the Ozark Arts Council, the North Arkansas College Choir, and the Harrison High School Band, among others. The NASO has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including recognition from the Arkansas Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2018, they were named the "Best Performing Arts Group" by the readers of the Harrison Daily Times. The orchestra is also committed to education and outreach, offering programs for students of all ages. They host an annual Young Artist Competition, which provides young musicians with the opportunity to perform with the orchestra and compete for cash prizes. They also offer a Music in the Schools program, which brings live performances and educational resources to local classrooms. Overall, the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra has become a beloved institution in the region, providing world-class performances and educational opportunities to the community. With a talented group of musicians and a commitment to excellence, the NASO is sure to continue to thrive for years to come.
