Hansen's early musical education was at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist, Steven Isserlis. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. Hansen's talent and dedication to his craft were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. Hansen's career as a soloist began in earnest after his success at the Tchaikovsky Competition. He has also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Valery Gergiev.
