Bernhard Scully is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact in the world of music. Born on August 22, 1975, in Detroit, Michigan, Scully grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Scully started playing the French horn at the age of 11 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Scully attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he studied with Richard Deane, a renowned French horn player. He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Myron Bloom, a former principal horn player of the Cleveland Orchestra. After completing his studies, Scully joined the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as their principal horn player. He held this position for six years before joining the Canadian Brass in 2003. As a member of the Canadian Brass, Scully has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Royal Albert Hall. Scully has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist at the International Horn Society's annual conference and has been a featured artist at the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to his performing career, Scully is also an accomplished educator. He has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Toronto, and the University of Michigan. He is currently the Associate Professor of Horn at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Scully has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1993, he won the International Horn Society's Solo Competition, and in 1995, he won the American Horn Competition. He has also been a finalist in the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany. In 2001, Scully was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for a solo career. He was the first French horn player to receive this award. Scully has also recorded several albums, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Canadian Brass. His solo albums include "Dialogues for Horn and Piano" and "Horn Music of Peter Mennin." He has also recorded albums with the Canadian Brass, including "Canadian Brass Takes Flight" and "Canadian Brass Goes to Hollywood." In addition to his classical music career, Scully is also an advocate for new music. He has commissioned and premiered several new works for the French horn, including pieces by composers Jennifer Higdon and Eric Ewazen.
