The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (OIGC) is a renowned musical group that has been spreading the message of hope, love, and unity through gospel music for over three decades. The choir was founded in 1986 by Terrance Kelly, a talented musician and choir director who had a vision of bringing people of different faiths and backgrounds together through music. The birth of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir was a result of Terrance Kelly's desire to create a space where people could come together and celebrate their differences while also finding common ground. Kelly, who had grown up in a Baptist church, was inspired by the power of gospel music to bring people together and wanted to create a choir that would reflect the diversity of the Bay Area. The choir started with just a handful of members, but it quickly grew in popularity as people from all walks of life were drawn to its message of unity and hope. The choir's first major performance was at the Oakland Coliseum in 1988, where they sang the national anthem before a crowd of over 50,000 people. Over the years, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the White House. They have also collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Linda Ronstadt, MC Hammer, and the Grateful Dead. One of the highlights of the choir's career was their performance at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, where they sang "We Shall Overcome" in honor of the civil rights movement. The performance was widely praised for its emotional power and was seen by millions of people around the world. The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1991, they won the Bay Area Music Award for Best Gospel/Inspirational Album, and in 2000, they were awarded the Community Service Award by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. In addition to their performances, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir is also known for their community outreach programs. They have worked with at-risk youth, homeless shelters, and other organizations to bring the healing power of music to those in need. Today, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir continues to inspire and uplift audiences around the world with their message of hope and unity.
