He was born on January 28, 1914, in Rome, Italy, to a family of musicians. His father, Giuseppe Ortensi, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Maria Luisa, was a pianist. Claudio showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Ortensi's musical education continued at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied composition and conducting. He graduated with honors in 1935 and began his career as a conductor. His first major appointment was as the conductor of the Rome Opera House in 1946, where he remained for five years. During his tenure at the Rome Opera House, Ortensi conducted numerous productions, including Verdi's "La Traviata," Puccini's "Tosca," and Mozart's "Don Giovanni." He also conducted the world premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Consul" in 1950, which was a critical and commercial success. In 1951, Ortensi was appointed the principal conductor of the RAI Symphony Orchestra in Rome, a position he held until 1960. During his time with the orchestra, he conducted a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Yehudi Menuhin, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Ortensi's international career began in the 1950s when he was invited to conduct the Vienna State Opera and the Berlin State Opera. He also conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In 1958, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, conducting Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." One of Ortensi's most significant achievements was his collaboration with Maria Callas. He conducted many of her performances, including her legendary 1955 performance of "La Traviata" at La Scala in Milan. He also conducted her in productions of "Norma," "Lucia di Lammermoor," and "Il Trovatore." Ortensi was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. He was also a respected composer, with works including a piano concerto, a violin concerto, and a symphony. Throughout his career, Ortensi received numerous awards and honors. In 1957, he was awarded the Italian Order of Merit for Culture and Art. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960. In 1974, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and in 1984, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ortensi continued to conduct well into his 80s, and his last performance was in 1995, just a few months before his death on May 11, 1995, in Rome. He left behind a legacy as one of the most respected and influential conductors of the 20th century.More....
