Augustin Savard was a French composer born on May 12, 1827, in Paris, France. He was the youngest of four children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Savard showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later studied composition with the renowned composer, Hector Berlioz. Savard's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of Berlioz and other French composers of the time. His first major work was a symphony, which he composed at the age of 19. The symphony was well-received, and Savard was encouraged to continue composing. In 1850, Savard was awarded the Prix de Rome, a prestigious prize for young composers. The prize included a scholarship to study in Rome for four years. While in Rome, Savard studied the works of Italian composers such as Verdi and Rossini, and his compositions began to reflect the Italian style. Savard's most famous work is his opera, "La Belle Hélène," which premiered in Paris in 1864. The opera is a comedic retelling of the story of Helen of Troy, and it was a huge success. The music is light and playful, with catchy melodies and witty lyrics. The opera has remained popular to this day and has been performed in opera houses around the world. Savard also composed several other operas, including "Le Roi Carotte" and "La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein." These operas were also well-received and helped establish Savard as one of the leading composers of his time. In addition to his operas, Savard composed several orchestral works, including symphonies, overtures, and ballets. His music is characterized by its lightness and playfulness, as well as its use of catchy melodies and colorful orchestration. Savard continued to compose throughout his life, and he remained active in the Parisian music scene until his death in 1900. His music has remained popular to this day and is still performed in concert halls and opera houses around the world.
