Born in China in 1969, Tu began his musical journey at a young age, showing a natural talent for the cello. He received his early training at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Shen Wenrong. Tu's talent and dedication to his craft quickly became apparent, and he was soon recognized as one of the most promising young cellists in China. In 1987, he won first prize in the National Cello Competition in China, which marked the beginning of his career as a professional musician. After completing his studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Tu went on to pursue further training in the United States. He received a full scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist Harvey Shapiro. During his time at Juilliard, Tu continued to hone his skills as a cellist and began to establish himself as a performer of note. He won several prestigious awards, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the Naumburg International Cello Competition. Tu's success as a performer led to numerous opportunities to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. In addition to his work as a performer, Tu has also made significant contributions to the field of music education. He has served as a faculty member at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Tu's dedication to music education has also led him to establish several programs aimed at promoting classical music among young people. He founded the Qiang Tu International Music Foundation, which provides scholarships and other support to young musicians, and he has also established the Qiang Tu Cello Academy, which offers intensive training to young cellists.
