He was a gifted cellist who started playing the instrument at a young age. His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Solodovnikov began his formal music education at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of the famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. He graduated with honors in 1971 and went on to become a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Solodovnikov's talent as a cellist quickly became apparent, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals around the world. In 1974, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was also invited to perform at the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1. Over the course of his career, Solodovnikov performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was also a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Solodovnikov was known for his passionate and expressive playing style, which was characterized by his ability to convey a wide range of emotions through his music. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Russian composers, such as Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev.
