Alexander Berne is a contemporary classical music composer, saxophonist, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in New York City in 1967 and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Berne started playing the saxophone at the age of 12 and quickly became interested in jazz and classical music. Berne studied music at the Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. He also studied with the renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano and the composer and conductor Gunther Schuller. Berne's early compositions were influenced by jazz and classical music, and he experimented with different styles and techniques. In the 1990s, Berne moved to Paris, where he continued to develop his unique style of composition. He started to incorporate electronic music and soundscapes into his works, creating a fusion of classical, jazz, and electronic music. Berne's compositions are known for their complex structures, intricate rhythms, and unconventional instrumentation. Berne has released several albums of his own compositions, including "The Soprano Saxophone Choir," "Flickers of Mime," and "Composed and Performed by Alexander Berne." He has also collaborated with other musicians, including the percussionist Cyro Baptista and the guitarist Marc Ribot. One of Berne's most notable works is "The Abandoned Orchestra," a multimedia project that combines music, film, and visual art. The project features a collection of abandoned instruments that Berne found in a Parisian flea market. He restored the instruments and used them to create a haunting and evocative sound. The project also includes a film by the French filmmaker Michel Gondry and a series of photographs by the American photographer David LaChapelle. Berne's other works include "The Saduk," a chamber opera based on a traditional Jewish folktale, and "The Soprano Saxophone Choir," a collection of compositions for a choir of soprano saxophones. Berne has also composed music for dance and theater productions, including works for the choreographer Bill T. Jones and the theater director Robert Wilson. Berne's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Berne continues to push the boundaries of classical music composition, exploring new sounds and techniques. His works are a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and connect people across cultures and generations.
