Elizabeth Beck was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Elizabeth showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Elizabeth's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking private lessons with renowned violinists and attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. At the age of 16, Elizabeth was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with the legendary violinist, Jaime Laredo. During her time at Curtis, Elizabeth won several prestigious awards, including the Astral Artists National Auditions and the Sphinx Competition. She also performed as a soloist with several major orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. After graduating from Curtis, Elizabeth continued her studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a Master of Music degree. She also studied with the renowned violinist, Miriam Fried, and performed in masterclasses with Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. Elizabeth's career as a soloist continued to flourish, and she performed with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. In addition to her solo career, Elizabeth was also a dedicated chamber musician. She was a founding member of the acclaimed Aeolus Quartet, which won the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. The quartet also performed at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Throughout her career, Elizabeth received numerous awards and accolades for her performances. She was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, and the Gilmore Young Artist Award. She was also a finalist in the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Elizabeth was known for her passionate and expressive playing, as well as her dedication to new music. She commissioned and premiered several new works for violin, including pieces by composers such as John Adams and Jennifer Higdon. Tragically, Elizabeth's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. Despite her illness, she continued to perform and inspire audiences with her music. She passed away on January 15, 2017, at the age of 31. Elizabeth Beck's legacy as a musician and artist continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
