He was the youngest of six children in a family of musicians. His father, Du Zhi-Hua, was a famous composer and conductor, and his mother, Zhang Xiu-Ying, was a talented singer. Growing up in a musical family, Du Ming-Xin was exposed to music from a young age and showed a natural talent for it. Du Ming-Xin began his formal music education at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1945, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composer Ding Shande. He graduated in 1950 and went on to become a professor at the conservatory, teaching composition and music theory. Du Ming-Xin's early works were heavily influenced by Western classical music, particularly the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. However, he also drew inspiration from traditional Chinese music, incorporating elements such as pentatonic scales and Chinese instruments into his compositions. One of Du Ming-Xin's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1957. The symphony is a fusion of Western and Chinese musical elements and is considered a landmark work in Chinese classical music. It was well-received both in China and abroad and helped establish Du Ming-Xin as one of the leading composers of his generation. In addition to his symphonies, Du Ming-Xin also composed numerous chamber works, including string quartets, piano trios, and sonatas. His chamber music is characterized by its intricate harmonies and use of Chinese folk melodies. Du Ming-Xin was also a prolific composer of film scores, having written music for over 100 films throughout his career. His film scores were known for their ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of the films they accompanied, and many of them have become classics in their own right. In 1983, Du Ming-Xin was awarded the National Prize for Art and Literature, the highest honor for artists in China. He continued to compose and teach until his death on December 23, 2013, at the age of 85. Du Ming-Xin's legacy as a composer and educator continues to be felt in China and around the world. His works have been performed by orchestras and ensembles in numerous countries, and his influence on Chinese classical music is still felt today.More....
