The Southern California Choral Society (SCCS) is a classical music ensemble based in Orange County, California. Founded in 1996, the SCCS has become one of the most respected choral groups in the region, known for its exceptional performances of choral masterworks and contemporary compositions. The SCCS was founded by Dr. Lori Loftus, a renowned choral conductor and music educator. Dr. Loftus had a vision of creating a community-based choral group that would bring together singers of all ages and backgrounds to perform high-quality choral music. With this goal in mind, she began recruiting singers from local churches, schools, and community organizations. The SCCS quickly grew in size and reputation, attracting talented singers from across Southern California. Today, the ensemble consists of over 100 singers, ranging in age from high school students to retirees. The group is led by Dr. Loftus, who continues to serve as its artistic director and conductor. Over the years, the SCCS has performed a wide range of choral works, from Renaissance motets to contemporary compositions. The group has collaborated with many of the region's top orchestras and soloists, including the Pacific Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. One of the SCCS's most notable performances was its 2009 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The group was invited to perform as part of the National Festival Chorus, which brought together choral groups from across the country to perform under the direction of renowned conductor John Rutter. The SCCS received rave reviews for its performance of Rutter's "Gloria," with critics praising the group's precision, clarity, and emotional depth. In addition to its performances, the SCCS is also committed to music education and outreach. The group regularly hosts workshops and masterclasses for local singers and conductors, and has established partnerships with local schools and community organizations to promote choral music education. The SCCS has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the prestigious Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The group has also been featured on several recordings, including a 2012 album of works by American composer Morten Lauridsen. Despite its many accomplishments, the SCCS remains committed to its original mission of bringing together singers from all walks of life to create beautiful music.
