Artist Info
Role:ComposerJorge Fernández Guerra was a Spanish composer born on January 1, 1950, in Madrid, Spain. He was the youngest of three siblings and grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a painter, and his mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Jorge showed an interest in music at a young age. Jorge began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument and began composing his own music by the age of ten. He continued his studies at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he studied composition, harmony, and counterpoint. After completing his studies, Jorge began working as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to music, and his works were performed in concerts and festivals throughout Spain. In 1975, he was awarded the National Prize for Young Composers, which helped to establish his career as a composer. Throughout his career, Jorge composed music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. He was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of electronic music and was one of the first Spanish composers to incorporate electronic elements into his works. One of Jorge's most significant works is his opera, "El Jardín de las Delicias" (The Garden of Delights), which was premiered in 1983. The opera is based on the famous painting by Hieronymus Bosch and explores themes of sin, temptation, and redemption. The work was praised for its innovative use of electronic music and its powerful emotional impact. Another notable work by Jorge is his "Concierto para Piano y Orquesta" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), which was premiered in 1990. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano and features complex rhythms and harmonies. It has been performed by some of the world's leading pianists, including Martha Argerich and Krystian Zimerman. Jorge's music was often inspired by literature and art, and he was particularly interested in the works of Spanish poets and writers. He composed several works based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca, including his "Suite Lorquiana" for piano and his "Canciones Lorquianas" for voice and piano. In addition to his work as a composer, Jorge was also a respected music educator. He taught composition and music theory at the Madrid Royal Conservatory and was a mentor to many young composers. Tragically, Jorge's life and career were cut short when he died of cancer in 1993 at the age of 43. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world. His innovative approach to music and his commitment to exploring new possibilities continue to inspire composers and musicians today.More....
