Nancy Goeres is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through her exceptional skills as a bassoonist. Born in 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Goeres grew up in a family of musicians, which played a significant role in shaping her musical career. Goeres began playing the bassoon at the age of 12, and by the time she was 16, she had already won her first major competition. She went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. She then pursued her Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School in New York City. Goeres' talent as a bassoonist quickly became evident, and she began to receive numerous invitations to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras. In 1980, she joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as their principal bassoonist, a position she held for 11 years. During her time with the orchestra, she also performed as a soloist, playing works by composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi, and Weber. In 1991, Goeres joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as their principal bassoonist, a position she still holds today. She has also performed with other major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Goeres has also made a name for herself as a chamber musician, performing with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. Throughout her career, Goeres has received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional talent as a bassoonist. In 1985, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. She has also been a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the Mellon Foundation Artist-in-Residence Grant. Goeres has also been recognized for her contributions to music education. She has served as a faculty member at the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music. She has also given masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Goeres is also a composer. She has written several works for bassoon, including a concerto that she premiered with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 2009.
