From a young age, Hynninen showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Hynninen attended the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied composition under the guidance of Eero Hämeenniemi and Kaija Saariaho. She also studied at the Royal College of Music in London and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Hynninen's early works were influenced by the Finnish folk music tradition, as well as the music of Jean Sibelius and other Finnish composers. Her compositions often feature intricate rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. One of Hynninen's early works, "Kalevala Fantasy," was inspired by the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.
