Maija Hynninen was born on May 12, 1978, in Helsinki, Finland. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Hynninen showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Hynninen attended the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied composition under the guidance of Eero Hämeenniemi and Kaija Saariaho. She also studied at the Royal College of Music in London and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Hynninen's early works were influenced by the Finnish folk music tradition, as well as the music of Jean Sibelius and other Finnish composers. Her compositions often feature intricate rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. One of Hynninen's early works, "Kalevala Fantasy," was inspired by the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. The piece features a large orchestra and incorporates elements of Finnish folk music, including the use of the kantele, a traditional Finnish stringed instrument. In 2005, Hynninen composed "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra," which was premiered by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece showcases Hynninen's skill as a cellist, as well as her ability to write for a large ensemble. The concerto features a solo cello part that is both virtuosic and lyrical, and the orchestration is rich and colorful.
