Harmonia Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The founding members of Harmonia Ensemble were violinist David Southorn, violist Liuh-Wen Ting, cellist Wendy Law, and pianist Sarah Rothenberg. All four musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and chamber groups, and they came together with the goal of creating a chamber music ensemble that would showcase their individual talents while also exploring the rich repertoire of classical music. Over the years, Harmonia Ensemble has expanded its membership to include other talented musicians, but the core group of Southorn, Ting, Law, and Rothenberg has remained intact. Together, they have performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Marlboro Music Festival. One of the highlights of Harmonia Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2010 Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City. The ensemble was invited to perform Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, which is considered one of the composer's most challenging and complex works. Harmonia Ensemble's performance was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth, and it helped to establish the group as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the United States. In addition to their performances at major concert halls and festivals, Harmonia Ensemble has also been recognized for their recordings. Their debut album, "Brahms: Piano Quartets," was released in 2009 and received critical acclaim for its sensitive interpretations and impeccable musicianship. The ensemble has also recorded works by other composers, including Schumann, Dvorak, and Shostakovich. Harmonia Ensemble has received numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 2007, they were awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed them to work with young musicians in underserved communities. They have also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. Despite their success, Harmonia Ensemble remains committed to their original mission of exploring the rich repertoire of classical music and showcasing the individual talents of their members. They continue to perform regularly at concert halls and festivals around the world, and they are widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative chamber music ensembles of their generation.
