Born on August 11, 1905, in London, England, Kilbey showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of nine. He received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of Herbert Withers and Felix Salmond. Kilbey's talent as a cellist was quickly recognized, and he began performing professionally at the age of 16. He joined the London Symphony Orchestra in 1926, where he played for 25 years and served as the principal cellist for 20 of those years. During his time with the orchestra, Kilbey also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with some of the most prominent musicians of his time. In addition to his work with the London Symphony Orchestra, Kilbey was also a founding member of the Philharmonia Quartet, which was formed in 1946. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Kilbey's career as a conductor began in the 1950s when he was invited to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He went on to conduct many other orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Kilbey was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. One of Kilbey's most notable performances as a conductor was his 1962 performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. Kilbey had a deep understanding of the piece, having played it himself many times as a cellist. His interpretation of the concerto was widely praised, and the performance was recorded and released on the Decca label. Kilbey's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1957, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also awarded the CBE in 1969 and was made a Knight Bachelor in 1974. Kilbey continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s, and his legacy as a musician and conductor continues to inspire new generations of classical musicians. He passed away on December 27, 1998, at the age of 93, leaving behind a rich legacy of exceptional musicianship and dedication to the art of classical music.More....
