Thelma J. Ryser was a classical music composer who was born on May 12, 1929, in New York City. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a violinist. Thelma showed an interest in music at a young age and began taking piano lessons when she was six years old. Thelma's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with Rosina Lhévinne. Thelma graduated from Juilliard in 1951 with a Bachelor of Music degree. After graduation, Thelma worked as a freelance composer and pianist. Thelma's music was characterized by its lyricism and emotional depth. She was influenced by the music of the Romantic era, particularly the works of Brahms and Schumann. Her compositions often featured lush harmonies and expressive melodies. One of Thelma's most famous works is her Piano Concerto, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1958. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with sweeping melodies and intricate passagework. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists, including Vladimir Horowitz and Martha Argerich. Another notable work by Thelma is her String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1962. The quartet is a deeply emotional work, with a hauntingly beautiful second movement that has become one of Thelma's most beloved compositions. Thelma's music was also featured in several films and television shows. She composed the score for the 1960 film "The Young One," directed by Luis Buñuel. Her music was also used in the television series "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits." Thelma continued to compose music throughout her life, despite suffering from arthritis in her later years. She passed away on December 22, 2006, at the age of 77. Thelma J.
